Maybe the oddest cloud formations ever seen are "lenticular"
formations. They are typically a lens shape, and occur in high
altitudes. They are found most commonly around high mountain
tops, but can also form when a weather front creates shear
winds.
This is a lenticular cloud formation above Mount Fuji, Japan.
A layered formation above Mount Fuji. One of the most interesting examples.
Not sure what to make of this one... but another example of
lenticular clouds.
This one is near and dear to our heart... Mount Shasta (northern California) where we grew up.
A flying saucer... with its landing gear down??
Spooky!
